Confronting Ray
Nancy dove behind the bed and lay still.
She heard the door close and footsteps tread softly on the carpet across the living room. A drawer was opened and closed and then the footsteps were in the hallway. Then Nancy heard the sound of running water.
Nancy lay on the floor, her heart pounding. She hoped that Ray would close himself in the bathroom, to give her time to escape.
But the running water stopped and the footsteps came closer. He seemed to be making stops in each room and then going to the next.
Then she remembered. She hadn’t locked the door behind her when she’d entered the apartment! Ray must have tried his key and found the door unlocked.
Ray knew someone was in the apartment! That’s why he was stopping in each room, why he was so quiet.
He was looking for her!
What should she do? There was no way for her to escape without him seeing her. Nancy’s first impulse was to slide all the way under the bed. But if he were looking for someone who was hiding, he would definitely look there, too. She decided to stay where she was.
Suddenly the room was flooded with light. Then a hand reached over the bed, grabbed hold of her arm, and hauled her to her feet. Nancy cried out in pain.
“Okay, what are you doing here?” Ray Ludlow demanded. He released Nancy’s arm and looked at her angrily. “You’re that amateur detective, Nancy Drew. I should have you arrested for breaking into my apartment. That’ll teach you not to go snooping around.”
Nancy took a deep breath. She knew she had to stay calm. She faced Ray and looked him squarely in the face.
“I’m just doing my job, Mr. Ludlow,” Nancy said coolly. “If you’d been the least bit helpful with this investigation you might not have become a suspect.”
Nancy knew she was taking a big chance confronting Ray Ludlow. He might become violent. She hoped George and Bess were within shouting distance if anything happened.
But Ray just stood there and looked at her, his mouth opened in surprise. “I’m a suspect!”
Nancy eyed him levelly. “That’s right,” she said. “Everyone knows that you don’t like Dan Wildman, that you’re threatened by his popularity. You might even be worried about losing your number one spot at KRCK. No one could reach you just after Dan was kidnapped . . . ”
“I was taking a drive!” Ray interrupted angrily.
“And,” Nancy added with emphasis, “you don’t seem to care about what is happening to Dan. He was overpowered and dragged away from the station where you work, and you don’t seem at all upset about it.”
“Why should I be upset?” Ray said, folding his arms and leaning against the desk. “While Dan is gone, his listeners will tune in to my program. They always used to,” he added bitterly.
“Are you saying you’re glad that Dan was kidnapped?” Nancy asked in disbelief.
“Of course, I’m glad!” Ray said. “Besides, I’m sure he’ll be all right. It’s not as if he’s in great danger.
